5 Things You Must Know About Meeting Summary
We should write meeting summaries regardless
Yes, I’ll be starting to share some self-improvement and professional working environment advice from now. If you are one of my followers of mine or have ever seen my articles before, you might be surprised why I’m starting to share knowledge in these topics given that I am a technical guy?
I am a data solution architect, data engineer and machine learning engineer. So, my day-to-day responsibilities are usually providing suggestions and implementing solutions, which seems that writing a meeting summary should not be part of my job. Yes, but I would say that it is still important to write a meeting summary for the sake of writing it, even if you might not need to share it to others.
In this article, I’ll share my opinion about writing a meeting summary from a technical person’s perspective. Why it is important and why we should do it, especially under the current circumstances that many of us are working from home because of the COVID-19. Once we clarified “why”, I’ll also provide some out-of-box tips and principles regarding it, which are the “what” and the “how”.
1. Why do we need to write meeting summaries?

As I stated in the introduction, even though we’re not the Secretary/Business Analyst/Project Manager, it is still highly recommended to prepare the meeting summaries, for the following reasons.
Keep concentrating
When the meeting is longer than 10 minutes, it will be very easy to lose focus sometimes. Well, I have to agree that not every meeting are that effective. Indeed, sometimes it doesn’t matter to miss some unuseful talking. However, this unuseful talking will very likely distract us from concentration. Consequently, when it comes back to the useful ones, we may not be able to switch back immediately.
In this case, if we know that we’re going to prepare the meeting summary, it is less likely to lose our concentration.
